Letters to Santa Program

Trumansburg Fire Company Letters to Santa Program 2019

September 2011 the Trumansburg Fire Company voted to start the Letters to Santa Program with a budget of $500 from the Fire Company and a few donations from people in the community. The plan was for children from the community to bring their letters to the firehouse and "mail" them to Santa using the special white mailbox located just outside the entrance. A committee reads the letters, contacts the families and will buy and wrap the presents. On Christmas Eve, Santa comes to the children's house on a firetruck and delivers one present from their letter.

Over the past eight years reading the letters has been a unique experience. Some children ask for toys, dolls, games, firetrucks, iPhones, etc. Some ask for something that might be considered an everyday item, like a toothbrush, but for them this is a luxury. Some ask for presents for their brothers, sisters, dogs, cats. Some list all the ways they have been good. Some admit they have not been as good as they should have been, but always promise to do better. Most ask how Santa, Mrs. Claus and the reindeer are doing and which kind of cookies Santa likes the best.

On the morning of Christmas Eve, the Trumansburg firehouse is buzzing with activity. Delivery routes being checked and rechecked, presents being loaded into the firetrucks. Finally, Santa and his helpers get into the firetrucks and off they go.

Every year Santa and the helpers have been rewarded for all their hard work when they see the joy on the faces of the children. Not all the children want a present, some just want to hug Santa. Many children say, "You read my letter!" More than once Santa and the helpers have been moved to tears.

This program is entirely funded by donations. Every penny goes to buying presents. We are grateful for the individuals and companies that have generously donated in the past.
